Features of sea otters:
- What do they look like? Otters have very fine brown and black fur, but as they age their hair gets lighter until it is almost white around their necks and hands. They have webbed feet and flat tails for swimming. The otter is the smallest marine animal but they can get up to five feet long and weigh up to around 70 pounds.
- How do they get around? Sea otters get around with their sandpaper like paws, webbed feet, and flat tails. All of these characteristics help the sea otter move and get around on their backs. If the otter gets scared it may flip to its stomach or dive under the water. Otters use their tails as a steering wheel and their feet to move.
- How fast are they? They do not move very fast, only about one and a half miles per hour. Sea otters can move faster if they get scared and need to swim faster.
